It involved a fancy layering job for the quick costume change that I was very proud of!

And I think you can balance the fine line of frump with proper fitting--I see plenty of "egads, why" clothes that aren't poorly made or fitted in vintage photos...just poorly selected lol! If these are not the right shape then the costume will simply not work. And it is important for the actors to feel the right kind of feel too, as it helps them to get into the character. But hand sewing the seams on a chemise or making gorgeous little embroidered flowers in the same colour as the fabric? Not so much' :)MrsC (Maryanne)https://www.blogger.com/profile/14440723067459232998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5024572182015008955.post-75216793934481642652011-12-17T04:47:21.592-08:002011-12-17T04:47:21.592-08:00I meant the micro details were NOT important.I meant the micro details were NOT important.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5024572182015008955.post-55321985294621146112011-12-17T04:45:49.175-08:002011-12-17T04:45:49.175-08:00Thanks for the insite! I was in a play during high school (Oliver) and I have taken from that the idea of the difference between theater and costuming for history. When you costume for yourself you want to go for authentisity as a matter of pride and as a matter of figuring out how these people felt in their clothes. So the sewing techniques are correct as you can get and the underclothes are as correct as possible. In theater, it only has to look right from far away so none of those micro details are important.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5024572182015008955.post-37798129232408965162011-12-16T07:05:32.762-08:002011-12-16T07:05:32.762-08:00What a fun project! Explained so clearly and now I have lots to ponder and imagine.
The challenge of finding technical and aesthetic solutions to a design concept and on a budget is something I know you will conquer with your usual aplomp, skill and enthusiasm. As usual, I am in awe of your ability to do it all and do it well. Because of how I think, I like to articulate them for myself and the list of constraints I could run off about what I observe those of you who make historically accurate costumes work with is really impressive!
Momi, you were born to make film costumes, obviously! All those unforgiving closeups blown up to ten times life size on the screen - subtle, pretty and accurate rules! :) Having said that, like I said the other day, hand finishing works better on stage generally as it has a nicer profile, and using the right kind of fabric is important too. Synthetics rarely look right on stage for period costuming - the drape is all wrong!MrsC (Maryanne)https://www.blogger.com/profile/14440723067459232998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5024572182015008955.post-87744223994951828812011-12-14T14:39:14.389-08:002011-12-14T14:39:14.389-08:00What a great write up!
