Oh the Liberty!

The Fabric Store has Liberty fabrics! So gorgeous. I have dipped into the sweatshirting for winter dresses - no I've not made any up, you will be the first to see when I do.
I have also been JONESING for a print called Alma for years.
This is the cool colourway - I prefer the black backgrounded version with warmer tones.
Anyway they have it in Tana Lawn, for $42m NZ. I have been to visit, felt it, held it up to myself, put it down and walked out at least twice.
I think this is a Thing. A Thing where one wants the unattainable, but when it IS attainable, it loses some of its allure.
Don't get me wrong, I ADORE this fabric. But in truth, I have three gorgeous lawns at home for next Summer's MaxiDress crop already. Really beautiful, Arts and Crafts inspired fabrics with poppies and things. And so, spending $134 on a dress length of Yet Another Fabric just became too hard.
You see, I am really, really keen on reducing my wardrobe down to the smallest number of workable items to have a glorious, Me Made, vibrant, self-expressively dressed life. I don't have the space for clothes I don't wear any more, not in my wardrobe rack, drawers, under my bed or in my heart.
The idea of a Few Good Things is playing more and more on my mind.

When I worked in an office for other people, buying fabric was a sanity valve. I had the money, I needed the creative outlet and I accumulated a lot. LOT. But now, I am self-employed, and I earn around a third of what I used to. Yup, for six days work too. But in those six days I can dress how I want to, not how other people think I ought to. So, the clothes I now make I love and wear and wear and wear.

Here's another thing - yesterday I officiated at my Uncle's funeral. It is something I do from time to time for people. We had a fantastic day of crying, laughing and bonding with family I've not seen for a long time. But of course how one dresses as a funeral celebrant is quite different to in the shop, or for on stage. I have to really reexamine my wardrobe for combinations that are formal, sombre and unflowing enough. I did a great job, I feel, and even put on some makeup - that's a trick these days - how does one put on makeup without eyelashes, glitter, contouring???
So, here I am, some alternate form of myself. Still a Me I can relate to, but not one of the more frequently seen Mes. And when I do cull my wardrobe (does anyone need 13 red thru purple merino tops?) I will need to let this Me have some options also. Possibly even whip up some more clothes for her.

Food for thought.

  1. I so totally agree with you. First off ,let me say, I absolutely love liberty fabric.. Just to touch it is heavenly.so soft so beautiful..But. I have TONS of fabric, and can not bring my self to pay that much for it.
AND----- I use to just make clothes, because I wanted to sew, and they would hang in the closet.. You can only wear so many dresses.ha I am retired, so I spend the most of my days in tshirts and shorts or in the winter months.. in sweatshirts and jeans.. I do love to sew, but just try to sew things I need... and not over flow the closet.
    Have a great weekend.
    Sorry about your uncle.

    1. Thank you Judy, my Uncle Kell was an amazing man, I have a feeling him and your Kenny would get on like a house on fire, out in the shed making things. And yes, it's not so much about the cost as the value to oneself in the end isn't it. When the value goes, the cost is irrelevant.

  2. "You see, I am really, really keen on reducing my wardrobe down to the smallest number of workable items to have a glorious, Me Made, vibrant, self-expressively dressed life." Sounds brilliant! I am hoping to do similar, but will have to get a lot better at Me-Making first. I've nearly finished knitting a vintage cardigan, but won't know for sure if it fits until I sew it up.

    1. oh that is what scares me about knitting-building it up from the inside out. And never quite knowing. But then there's frogging, of course, far easier to decon and reconstruct a knitted garment than a sewn one!

    2. Indeed. That's what scares me about sewing: once you cut the fabric there's no going back!

    3. Well there is, if you are willing to make increasingly smaller things. Coasters? ;-)

  3. I really love Liberty fabric too but like you I just can't justify the splurge for fabric, not even something made up. I do have a wee bit of it but I am so scared to cut into it that I have never used it and probably never will. I love the idea of having a fully functional wardrobe, filled with clothes that you have sewn, love and actually wear. Very sorry to hear about your Uncle but glad it was a celebration. Xx

    1. It's funny isn't it, how it seems so obvious that one would want a functioning wardrobe as a result of sewing but it's not that simple in practice! hits and misses, orphans, changes of lifestyle, they all impact the result. Do use and ear and love you Liberty, it is so lovely to wear. But I do kno what you mean. i basically only have two summer patterns now so I've taken the guessing out of it all!

  4. Did my last comment go through? As I was saying, I like your approach, you go, check it, leave, go, check it, leave it. In the end it feels so good to leave it. I like your wardrobe culling approach - I have started to do it with mixed results. "Normal" makeup? I bet you look dazzling in that as well.

    1. Slipped through the cracks my love! thank you for trying again. I am practising mindfulness I guess. And a teeny bit of indulgent interventionism. i.e. If it was meant, it will still be there. The whole bolt has sold I am told and I had a wee twinge but only a wee one. ;-) i got over my nrmal makeup day by the way with two drag days in a row! and no my eyes are sore - clown white I think is the culprit.

    2. Love your attitude towards dressing, MaryAnne. Less is definitely more. It seems every week I kick another garment or two from the closet to fill it with something I REALLY like. Just makes sense.
