Today I want to share my delight and gratitude to Burda, for making pattern 7396. I have had this EXACT garment in my head for years now, but it was just a bit more thinking than I was willing to put into a make for myself. So when I was passing time while on holiday idly flicking through the Burda pattern book in a shop and found this one, I was ecstatic. And it was half price!
I love the combo of the high waist, scoop neck and lapels. And it went up to a 28, which is kind of where I am at!My make of it. I had to lengthen the bodice, and cut more flare into the skirts to get the effect I wanted, but it came together super fast. The 100% cotton has woven stripes made up of white and grey dots, bought to ages ago for about $2m. So no big loss if it didn't work out. The stripes are a mess - I meticulously cut this top out to match the stripes, ahem, without checking to see if the bottom layer of the fabric lined up with the top. Sooo, not my best work. But I still love it. I am already making another one - no stripes this time.
It has a hint of the 1910's era about it, fun for the year of the Titanic Centenary and the popularity of Downton Abbey!
Cute...definately a modern take on a titanic look!
ReplyDeleteCor Wanda that is the speediest time from posting to comment yet! Glad you like it :)
ReplyDeleteOh fhat's nice. I thought the stripe placement was intentional to empthasize the seam! Can't wait to see the next version.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. I have this pattern down in my SWAP for this year so it is great to see how it worked out for you. Looks great.
ReplyDeleteHi BeaJay and Catherine, nice to meet you! The next one is going to have the pocket flaps too. Well, if they look dotty they'll get left off that is! :) BeaJay, if a pattern is in your SWAP does that mean it may get made up? So what does SWAP stand for? I am fascinated! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that! The best part is, if the stripe alignment bothers you (which you shouldn't worry about!) you can tie a sash around the waist and look even more Titanic-y!
ReplyDeleteYou should combine it with a hat like one of these http://www.britishpathe.com/video/hat-fashions-in-paris/query/fashion and a black umbrella....that would be so 1st series downton.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, a sash and a good hat and I'll be off to tea with the Crawleys or whatever their name is :) GIven there are a couple of Titanic things happening here I may just do that, although make #2 is probably more suitable, being all flowery and that. :)
ReplyDeleteLove all your posts Maryanne, so inspiring ... not that I can sew to save myself. I am in Wellington a lot; would you sew for me (for payment of course) if I provide fabric??? Sue from RW
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, have you discovered The Hen House yet? It's where the RW ladies have regrouped. Email me - maryannec (at) xtra etc and we can discuss further :)
ReplyDeletesue, its fab on you !
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely. In fact I am thinking about making it and adding length, so that it becomes a dress.
ReplyDeleteFabulous coat. I love that neckline. Those lapels are adorable. I can see how the stripe placement would irritate you but I think it adds definition to the high-waistedness of it all!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely adore your version.
ReplyDeleteI love your fabric selection on this perfectly at home at Downton Abbey Coat. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!! From that picture it looks like the stripes are almost alternating (if that makes sense..) - I don't think it looks like a mess at all!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great on you! Burda is terrific. I was at a fabric shop recently and I overheard one of the salespeople warning a new sewer away from Burda! I couldn't believe it. I waited until the salesperson walked away and then I told the sewer about the Burda Style website. I don't love printable patterns but I do love Burda! I wish someone had clued me into Burda when I was starting out.
ReplyDeleteI wouldnt have been attracted to the envelope photo but your rendition is amazing. You have converted me to stripes....something i used to avoid.
