My Play Date with Destiny

Guess how I spent my Saturday? No word of a lie dear readers, I spent it playing with my destiny.
You see, I can now reveal my BIG NEWS!! The news that had me scrubbing the bathroom floor, resigning my day job and spending my Saturday on a play date.
MrC and I are taking over a business. It is a ....drumroll.....CRAFT & SEWING SUPPLIES SHOP!!!! I shall pause now while the natural envy you are experiencing settles down......................can I keep going now? Good (teehee!!!)
Today I went and helped Les the current owner as he was by himself and had SO MUCH FUN!! Cake decorating supplies for a fantasy 21st cake, ribbon and flowers for a bridal favour, spiral steel boning for a corset remake, wool and needles to knit a snood, and so many more. Wonderful people who came out in a STORM to get their creative needs met, so many folk happy to hear that the shop wasn't closing when Les and Dianne retire but carrying on. It was exhilarating. For me to get this taste of my future, and to hand over paper bag after paper bag of possibilities.
So, Dear Readers, Goldings Handcrafts in Marion St, Wellington is closing on 23 March and on 1 April, Made Marion will open for business. Two classrooms - one enclosed and one open to the shop with studio space, a couch or two to sit and knit or handsew, tea, coffee and laughter, and every fabulous item known to womankind for sale too. Seven days a week.
It's my destiny. We dated, we fell in love. :)

  1. Oh cool, I can't wait. I discovered Goldings Crafts about a week after moving here from the UK and didn't realise they would be closing. What are you planning to offer in the classrooms? Will make a date gorgeous Sun 1st April!
Ps you were probably best inside today anyway!

    1. Lovely to meet another local, Nikki :) Looking forward to meeting you in person :) We'll be teaching all kinds of stuff - probably for kick off there'll be classes in vintage style aprons, teacosies, cupcake decorating, absolute beginner sewing, hat making, and possibly a few other things. All chosen because I can teach them without having to do a lot of R&D with so much else to think about! :)

  4. Now I'm not normall one to seethe. But I am quite absolutely jealous about this. But at the same time soooo happy for you. I do believe in destiny and karma... for all my sins! I have no doubt that with all your expertise and passion you will create such a wonderful hub of creativity. A very special community of stitchers is about to get very lucky. Really looking forward to future posts about Made Marion. Fabulous name btw. Perhaps you could have live Skype coverage of the sessions so we all can join in! x

    1. Aww thank you Janene. Mind you, stitchers are just a subset, which I think is why this business is so successful even in tough times - it sells everything! heheh. I guess I will make it more sewing orientated than it is now, as noone in Welly stocks the special fabbo things we sewists crave, like a good french curve, or good chalks, so many things!
I love the idea of live feed tutorials, but as we are at the other end of GMT, you'd have to be pretty determined to attend heheh. But some vid tutorials are possibly forthcoming, according to my PR guru :)

  8. I once gave advice to someone who asked "how do you find your purpose". I said "Look at your hobbies. It is usually what you are good at and what makes you happy. Find a job or start a business where you can use as many of those hobbies as possible. That is where your purpose is." Congrats!

  10. Wow! It's so good to hear that a good craft shop is not closing - even though it's on the other side of the Earth and I'll probably never get there. :-)

    1. I know what you mean, it's not jsut about what is happening locally any more, it's about the global trend. If we can do it, you can do it kind of thing. :)

  11. OH!!!! I'm so SO sorry I am behind the times on this! Congratulations!!!!!!! I love the name, it's so cool. :)

I also love the way your mind works- handing over "paper bag after paper bag of possibilities" is exactly what it feels like sometimes. It's really fun to have a little finger in the projects of many many people.

    Congrats!

    1. I feel almost a ltitle sad that maybe on day they'll just be paper bags of profit! But I know myself well enough to know that there is a deep, resonating sense of satisfaction that lasts a long time, compared with the thrill of novelty, and I feel it in this project. Now, what we need is for the Consulting Seamstress to come over and do some guest classes. :)
